Scott prepared a roast beef for our dinner tonight. Sadly, although his preparation can’t be faulted, it wasn’t a particularly good meal, and that’s because of the meat. It was poor-quality, and all the technique in the world couldn’t disguise the fact.
Serves us right for buying a Safeway special, I know. We won’t make that mistake again. And in a nice coincidence of timing, this article in the NY Times is another reminder that when it comes to meat, it’s better in every way to eat just one really good cut of beef than five bad ones.
Please, no drive-by sanctimony from the vegan crowd. I’m not interested in removing meat from my diet entirely. I am going to make more of an effort to focus on only buying quality meat from quality sources, even if it means we can’t afford to buy it as often.

We did a bolar beef roast last night. I had never heard of the cut before finding it at the butcher. We got it at http://www.dietrichsmeats.com/ which is only like a three hour drive for us. A bit tough by today’s standards, but very tasty.
We are lucky that one of the chains near us, Shoprite, has decent meat although the prepared dinner selections are taking up more and more of the store we use. However others close enough to shop at have really huge meat shops and include things like ox-tail, pork fat and pork liver.
It sounds like your roast would have made a good pot roast however.

Well, here in the SF Bay Area we’re definitely not short on good options for buying groceries, we were just being lazy by not going someplace else for our meat.
The leftovers will be braised and added to a meat sauce for pasta, where they will undoubtedly taste much better.

Well if whois is correct about your address you aren’t very far from Gilroy. At some point in the early 90s I spent a lot of time in Santa Cruz (SCO Unix) and my wife insisted on a trip to Gilroy. It wasn’t during the festival however.
